TEENAGE CANDIDATE GIVES BIRTH DURING PRIMARY LEAVING EXAMINATIONS

Amuria District, Uganda, November 3, 2025

In a remarkable and emotional turn of events, a 17-year-old Primary Seven pupil from Acherer Primary School in Wera, Amuria District, gave birth to a baby boy in the middle of her Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE).

The incident occurred at exactly 10:03 a.m. during her first paper—Mathematics—when the candidate went into labor. According to eyewitnesses, the girl began complaining of severe waist pain about an hour into the exam but bravely attempted to continue writing. As her condition worsened, the invigilator and the Deputy Head Teacher immediately rushed her to a nearby health center, where she safely delivered a healthy baby boy.

The school administration and medical staff quickly provided full support to ensure the safety and well-being of both the mother and the newborn. Remarkably, after receiving medical attention, the young mother continued her exams from her hospital bed, with an invigilator present as her newborn rested beside her.

Later in the day, the UNEB District Monitor and the District Education Officer (DEO) visited the pupil, offering counseling and encouragement. They assured her of continued support and urged her to remain focused on her education despite the challenges. The pupil has been granted permission to remain at the health facility for 24 hours during the examination period to ensure her recovery and comfort.

The incident has reignited discussions around teenage pregnancy, sex education, and support systems for young mothers pursuing their studies. Many have praised the girl’s determination and resilience, calling for increased efforts from parents, schools, and communities to protect and empower teenage girls.

This story serves as a powerful reminder of the realities faced by young learners and the need to create a compassionate and supportive environment for pupils facing difficult circumstances.
