MBALE – UGANDA – Tuesday, 7 July 2026
Regional security leaders and district authorities have intensified efforts to ensure that the 2026 Imbalu circumcision season is conducted peacefully, following a high-level consultative meeting chaired by the Resident City Commissioner (RCC) of Mbale Wopuwa Gorge.

The meeting brought together officials from the regional security command, district leadership, representatives of Inzu Ya Masaaba, led by Umukuuka IV, and the institution’s Prime Minister, Mathias Nabutele, to discuss coordinated preparations for the forthcoming cultural celebrations.

During the meeting, participants emphasized the need for dialogue, cooperation, and adherence to the law to guarantee a peaceful and successful Imbalu season. Security agencies reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding lives and property throughout the traditional circumcision festivities, which are expected to attract thousands of participants and visitors from across Uganda and beyond.

District leaders and security officials resolved to convene additional consultative meetings involving all stakeholders associated with the Imbalu cultural program. The objective is to harmonize activity schedules, streamline planning, and prevent any misunderstandings that could disrupt the celebrations.

The consultations come amid continued uncertainty over who should officially preside over the 2026 Imbalu ceremonies due to the ongoing cultural leadership dispute involving the titles of Umukuuka wa Bugisu and Umukuuka of the Bamasaaba. The leadership impasse has generated public debate in recent months, prompting government authorities to encourage dialogue and peaceful engagement among the concerned parties.

Officials at the meeting stressed that the preservation of the Bamasaaba cultural heritage should remain the central focus of the Imbalu season, urging all stakeholders to prioritize unity, peace, and respect for the law over individual interests.

Security leaders assured the public that they will continue engaging cultural leaders, local governments, and community representatives to ensure that all planned activities are well coordinated and that the 2026 Imbalu ceremonies are celebrated in a secure and orderly environment.

The Imbalu circumcision ceremony is one of Uganda’s most celebrated cultural traditions, symbolizing the transition of boys into manhood among the Bamasaaba people. The event attracts thousands of cultural enthusiasts, tourists, and dignitaries, making effective coordination and security planning essential to its success.
