Kampala, Uganda – February 11, 2026 – The Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) is grappling with the loss of yet another senior officer following the sudden death of Major General David Sande, the commander of the Armored Brigade in Masaka. Sande passed away early this morning at a hospital in Mpigi District after experiencing severe breathing complications.
According to a statement released by the UPDF’s Acting Director of Public Information, Major General David Sande died at 3:45 a.m. at a hospital in Mpigi District. He had been rushed there after suddenly developing severe breathing difficulties while on route to All Saints Cathedral in Kampala, where he was scheduled to serve as a sword bearer during a ceremony. Despite resuscitation efforts, he could not be revived. “We have lost our beloved commander,” the statement concluded, conveying the deep sorrow of the entire force.
Relatives and close friends who last saw Sande during Christmas celebrations reported no visible signs of ill health. One associate, speaking anonymously, shared their confusion: “I was told it was an accident, and then shortly after that, it was a heart attack. I don’t understand it because he never told me he had such a condition, despite us being friends for a very long time.
“Major General Sande rose to prominence beyond military circles during the 2021 general elections, where he made controversial statements while overseeing security operations. He warned against those attempting to intimidate or provoke chaos, emphasizing that the army would not allow a thoughtless transfer of power. At the time, he was commanding the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and faced public backlash for his remarks, which the UPDF later distanced itself from. The Resident City Commissioner for Masaka defended Sande, suggesting his statements had been misinterpreted.
Promoted from Brigadier General to Major General three years after the 2021 elections, Sande was remembered by colleagues and community members as a kind and dedicated individual. At the time of his death, he had recently renovated a section of the school block at Akalo Primary School in Kabale District, where he received his early education. As an old boy of the institution, he remained actively involved, contributing to its development “in each and everything,” as one associate described.
Mourners, including relatives and friends, have begun gathering at Sande’s family home in Uranga Village, Chinamira Sub-County, Kabale District, to offer condolences and support.
The UPDF has not yet announced funeral arrangements, but tributes continue to pour in for the fallen officer, highlighting his service to the nation and his commitment to community upliftment. This loss comes amid a series of high-profile deaths in the military, further straining the force as it reflects on the contributions of leaders like Sande.
