Fuel Crisis Deepens in Uganda as Prices Surge and Supplies Tighten

By Our Staff Reporter

Uganda — April 2026
Uganda is grappling with a worsening fuel situation as shortages and rising pump prices continue to disrupt transport and drive up the cost of essential commodities across the country.

For the fifth consecutive day, motorists and transporters in major urban centers, including Kampala, have been scrambling to secure fuel amid limited supplies. Long queues have formed at filling stations, while others have temporarily shut down after running dry, leaving many commuters stranded and businesses struggling to operate.

Despite assurances from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development and the Uganda National Oil Company that national fuel stocks remain stable, the situation on the ground paints a different picture. Many stations report inconsistent deliveries, while others have resorted to rationing available fuel.

Transport Costs Soar

The immediate impact has been felt in the transport sector, where fares have sharply increased. Public transport operators cite high fuel costs as the main driver, passing the burden onto passengers. Boda boda riders and taxi operators have also raised prices, making daily commuting more expensive for ordinary Ugandans.

Commodity Prices Rising

The ripple effects are now evident in local markets. Traders report that the cost of transporting goods from rural areas to urban markets has surged, leading to noticeable increases in food prices. Essential commodities such as maize flour, vegetables, and cooking oil have all recorded price hikes in recent days.

“Everything has gone up,” said a vendor at a city market. “Transport alone is now too expensive, and we have no choice but to increase prices.”

Businesses Feeling the Strain

Small and medium-sized enterprises are among the hardest hit. Businesses that rely on transport and logistics are facing rising operational costs, while some fuel stations have been forced to suspend operations entirely due to lack of supply.

Economists warn that if the situation persists, it could trigger broader inflationary pressures, affecting the cost of living nationwide.

Calls for Intervention

Stakeholders are now calling on the government to urgently address supply chain disruptions and stabilize fuel prices. Analysts suggest that improved distribution, strategic reserves management, and transparent communication could help restore public confidence.

For now, uncertainty remains high, with many Ugandans bracing for continued economic pressure as the fuel crisis unfolds.
