KAMPALA, Uganda – February 18, 2026,A senior government minister has declared her intention to contest for the position of Speaker of Parliament, promising to fight corruption, promote accountability, and restore the dignity of the House.

Persis Namuganza said she is ready to take over the reins of Parliament and provide leadership that strengthens oversight and rebuilds public confidence in the institution.

Her declaration comes at a time when interest in the Speaker’s seat is growing, with several political heavyweights reportedly eyeing the position. The race is expected to attract both seasoned legislators and members of the Executive, including senior cabinet figures.

Namuganza said her ambition is driven by a desire to offer servant leadership and reconnect Parliament with the people.
“Like I have said before, I am guided by my inner conviction. I have many friends and supporters. What we need is leadership that speaks to the hearts of the people,” she said.

She further argued that the country deserves a Parliament that commands respect locally and internationally.
“People have witnessed moments that have embarrassed Parliament and diminished the image of our country. We must restore the dignity of the House,” she added.

The minister revealed that she is receiving strong support from Members of Parliament and expressed optimism about her prospects.
“I am getting good support, and I am happy about it. For the first time again, the country is going to have the best Speaker,” she said confidently.

She reassured legislators that, if elected, she would work closely with both the government and opposition to ensure effective oversight and smooth legislative processes.
