Mbale, Uganda | January 1, 2026
The Bamasaaba community has launched an ambitious UGX 2 billion community fundraising drive aimed at establishing Mbale Public University, a transformative higher education institution expected to serve eastern Uganda and the wider region.
The initiative was officially unveiled during the New Year address of His Highness Umukuuka IV Mayatsa Joram Khamboson, the cultural leader of Inzu Ya Masaaba Cultural Institution, who called on all Bamasaaba households to take collective responsibility for the future of their children through education.
Speaking to the nation, Umukuuka IV described the proposed university as “a lasting legacy for future generations and a pillar for knowledge, research, and sustainable development in Bugisu.”
Community-Based Funding Model
Under the fundraising framework, every household has been encouraged to contribute:
Adults: UGX 2,000
Youth: UGX 1,000
In a show of personal commitment, Umukuuka IV pledged UGX 1 million, with members of the cultural cabinet also making individual contributions. Collections will be coordinated through the Mbale University Office in Mbale City, with the drive running until 31 December 2026.
A Broader Development Vision
The Mbale Public University initiative is part of a wider six-point development agenda under Inzu Ya Masaaba’s 2026 program. Key pillars include agricultural transformation through the planting of 10 million coffee trees, promotion of Hass avocado farming, and establishment of a four-acre integrated model farm personally dedicated by Umukuuka IV as a demonstration project.
Other focus areas include the formalization of cultural practices such as marriage and circumcision, strengthening unity through clan visitations within Uganda, Kenya, and the diaspora, as well as recognizing outstanding contributors through Excellence Service Awards.
Leadership Message
In his address, Umukuuka IV emphasized collective action and self-reliance as the foundation for progress.
“The future of the Bamasaaba lies in what we do together today. Development begins with us, and education remains our strongest tool,” he said.
The proposed Mbale Public University is expected to become a regional center of academic excellence, research, and innovation, reinforcing Bugisu’s role in national development.
