ELGON CONNECT INITIATIVE FOR TRADE, TOURISM, AND DEVELOPMENT (ECI-TTD) LAUNCHED TO BOOST REGIONAL GROWTH

Mbale, Uganda – November 2, 2025
In a significant move aimed at enhancing economic growth and regional collaboration, the Elgon Connect Initiative for Trade, Tourism, and Development (ECI-TTD) was officially launched today at the Mount Elgon Hotel in Mbale. The event was presided over by the Ugandan Ambassador to China, Her Excellency Ambassador Oliver Wonekha, who underscored the initiative’s potential to drive sustainable development in the Elgon region, which spans parts of Uganda and Kenya.

Objectives of the ECI-TTD
The ECI-TTD is designed to achieve several key objectives:
1.Enhancing Trade Opportunities: By creating a robust network of businesses and entrepreneurs, the initiative aims to facilitate trade exchanges between Uganda and Kenya, promoting local products and services.

2. Promoting Tourism: The Elgon region is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, wildlife, and cultural diversity. The initiative will focus on marketing these attractions to both local and international tourists, increasing visitor numbers and generating revenue.

3.Sustainable Development: ECI-TTD emphasizes sustainable practices in trade and tourism to ensure that economic growth does not come at the expense of the environment or local communities.

4.Capacity Building: The initiative includes training programs for local businesses and communities to equip them with the skills needed to thrive in a competitive market.

The launch event brought together stakeholders from various sectors, including government officials, local business leaders, and representatives from non-governmental organizations. Notable partnerships have been established with:

– Local Governments: To ensure alignment with regional development plans and policies.
-Tourism Boards: To create joint marketing strategies that highlight the unique offerings of the Elgon region.
-Business Associations: To foster collaboration among local businesses and facilitate trade missions.

Quotes from Leaders
During the launch, regional leaders emphasized the importance of collaboration. “The Elgon Connect Initiative is a testament to what can be achieved when we work together. By harnessing our shared resources and strengths, we can create a thriving economy that benefits all,” stated one of the Elgon promoters.

Additionally, a representative from the Kenya Tourism Board remarked, “This initiative will not only enhance tourism but also strengthen the bonds between our nations, creating a model for regional cooperation.”

Future Prospects
As the ECI-TTD moves forward, plans are underway for a series of workshops and trade fairs aimed at engaging local communities and businesses. The initiative also aims to establish an online platform to connect traders and tourists, providing a comprehensive resource for those interested in the Elgon region.

With the launch of the Elgon Connect Initiative, stakeholders are optimistic about the potential for economic revitalization and sustainable development in the region, paving the way for a prosperous future for both Uganda and Kenya.
