KAMPALA, Uganda – Thursday, 6 August 2026
Political and local government leaders from the Bugisu sub-region have renewed their commitment to improving service delivery and accelerating development following high-level engagements with Vice President Jessica Alupo and the Speaker of Parliament.

The delegation, which included Mbale District LCV Chairperson Hon. Tony Wamagale, Members of Parliament, and Local Council Five (LCV) chairpersons from across the region, first participated in a Ministry of Local Government meeting aimed at strengthening accountability, improving public service delivery, and intensifying the fight against corruption in local governments.

The engagement forms part of the government’s broader campaign to operationalise President Yoweri Museveni’s directive on eliminating corruption and ensuring that public resources directly benefit citizens through efficient service delivery.

Presiding over the meeting, Vice President Jessica Alupo called on district leaders to put the interests of citizens first by ensuring that government programmes are effectively implemented and monitored.

She emphasized that initiatives such as the Parish Development Model (PDM), improved healthcare, quality education, and other government interventions can only achieve their intended impact if public officials uphold transparency, accountability, and integrity.

The Vice President urged local leaders to work closely with government institutions to eliminate corruption, describing it as one of the greatest obstacles to development and improved livelihoods.

Speaking after the meeting, Mbale District LCV Chairperson Hon. Tony Wamagale welcomed the guidance from the Vice President, saying leaders from Bugisu remain committed to working together to strengthen oversight of government programmes and ensure value for public resources.

“We have agreed to enhance collaboration in monitoring government projects and ensuring that services reach the people they are intended to benefit,” Wamagale said.

Following the engagement, the Bugisu leaders paid a courtesy visit to the Speaker of Parliament, where discussions focused on the region’s key development priorities and strategies for securing greater government support.

Among the issues raised were the need to improve feeder road networks, promote agricultural value addition, strengthen education and healthcare services, and increase investment in infrastructure to support economic growth across the sub-region.

The Speaker commended the leaders for presenting a united front in advocating for the region’s development, noting that cooperation among political leaders is essential in attracting government support and ensuring effective representation of local priorities.

She reaffirmed Parliament’s commitment to supporting initiatives that improve the welfare of communities and pledged continued collaboration in addressing the challenges facing the Bugisu sub-region.

Hon. Wamagale said the engagements had provided an important opportunity for the region’s leaders to collectively lobby for increased investment and improved service delivery in Mbale, Sironko, Bulambuli, Namisindwa, and Manafwa districts.

He expressed optimism that continued unity among Bugisu leaders would strengthen the region’s voice in national development planning and accelerate implementation of projects that improve livelihoods.

The meetings underscored the growing emphasis on accountability, regional cooperation, and coordinated leadership as government intensifies efforts to improve service delivery and deliver sustainable development across the country.
